Road Trip!

After waiting nearly 1 year, I finally got up the courage to take the boys to see Nana and Popi in Fessenden, North Dakota.  Owen had a Friday off from school, so after school ended on Wednesday, the three of us piled into the car and hit the road.

After previous trips with Owen and stopping multiple times on the way making our 7 hour trip take 9 hours, I decided that we would only stop once.  Owen was excited to get to watch movies on the way.  Even Cole had his own TV screen, although I'm not sure he cared.  The only problem with this scenario was whichever movie Owen picked would have to be watched until we reached Fargo.  After a little prodding from Mom, he picked the movie Mac and Me (a 90 minute movie would keep him entertained much longer than watching How the Grinch Stole Christmas 7 times in a row!)

Although we didn't make it to Fargo tear-free (there were several episodes of Cole, Owen, or both of them at the same time screaming at the top of their lungs), it was our very first stop!  For those of you passing through Fargo with kids, the Petro Truck Stop is the place to be!  Huge bathroom stalls are a must to fit our Cadillac of a stroller!  Plus they have a movie theater! You would think that a truck stop might have a movie playing that isn't the most kid friendly, but that wasn't the case when we were there!  The animated Disney movie Bolt was playing and kept Owen entertained while Cole had a snack.

After our pit stop, we were back on the road for what seemed like forever, but eventually we arrived at our destination.  Hip hip hooray!   All three of us had enough time in the car!  We spent 5 fun filled days in Fessenden.  Grandma Schatz even drove all the way to see us.  The boys had a great time playing with their Great Nana.  They sure kept her on her toes!

Owen is and always has been a bit of a Nana's boy!   And Owen has his Nana Bev wrapped around his little finger!  He even convinced her to sit on Main Street with him waiting for the trains to come through town!  He kept reminding her, "We'll just be patient, Nana.  The train will come." as they waited and waited.  Luckily, Fessenden has numerous trains every day.  And to Owen's delight, after nearly an hour of patiently waiting, a train finally rolled into town.

One evening we were invited out to Ilona's farm to see all of her many animals.  We were greeted by two rather rambunctious dogs.  Then Owen got to feed some goats, ride a miniature pony, and see several large longhorn cows and many, many bunnies.  I thought he would be a little nervous riding the pony, especially after the first one he sat on started acting up.  (They are tiny, but feisty little things!)  But no!  Ilona just put him on a different one and around the corral he rode.  Of course Ilona stayed by his side!  He had a great time seeing the animals up close.  Maybe even a little too close at times.  Like when the very large long horned bull came stomping up to us!  I must say, I was a bit on edge looking into the eyes of this very large animal.  Thank goodness there was a fence separating us!

We spent another day driving to Bismarck to see Grandma and Grandpa Klein.  It had been a while since we had seen them, and they were very excited to see the boys.  Owen was on the move most of the time running around outside and up and down the halls with Nana Bev.  And with the overly warm weather and no air conditioner, Owen was overheating!  So of course, off came the shirt!

Grandma Klein outdid herself again whipping up a very tasty German lunch of knephla soup and kuchen (both of which Cole loved!)  After tasting the home cooked meal, he was no longer interested in eating his baby food.  Who can blame him?

With Owen constantly on the go, there was no getting him to sit still for a photo with the grandparents.  But Cole was happy to sit and stare at his great grandparents.  That is until he realized that the face he was gazing at wasn't one he knew.  Then came the tears!  I guess we need to make it to Bismarck more often!

We had a great time visiting everyone on our road trip.  It's as close to a vacation as I get having all sorts of grandmas and grandpas around to entertain the kids!  We'll definitely be back to visit again sometime soon!
