Dia de las Velitas is a Colombian holiday that signifies the beginning of the Christmas season. It's celebrated on December 7th, the Eve of the Immaculate Conception. Neighborhoods all across Colombia will be lit up with candles as far as the eye can see.
We celebrated Dia de las Velitas a couple days early on Sunday rather than try to cram it into a school night. An added bonus was the temperature was quite bearable for a December evening so we took full advantage of it. The girls made a few paper lanterns in preparation for the special occasion.
For dinner, we had delicious take-out from our favorite South American restaurant, Chimborazo. Empanadas, lapingachos, chicken, rice, sweet plantains, oh my! It was delicious!
After dinner, we bundled up in on our winter gear and headed outside with dozens of candles we've accumulated just for the occasion. Rose and Kate were in charge of displaying the battery-operated candles.
While Owen took care of all those that needed a lighter.
After the last candle was finally lit, Owen thought he'd be silly and take a lap running around the house. There he goes - without even a zipped jacket! Those crazy teenage boys.
With the candles glowing brightly, we headed inside to warm up and enjoy a dessert of tres leches.
Feliz Dia de las Velitas! (Happy Day of the Little Candles!)
