Happy New Year!

I hope everyone had a spectacular New Year's celebration! We had a splendid time ringing in the new year.

On New Year's Eve, we took Owen ice skating for the very first time. Ever since Owen started walking, his Papa has been itching to get him out on the ice. So after Shane came home from work, we got ourselves bundled up and headed off to the ice arena in Roseville.
The skating arena was packed full of open skaters. We eventually found a place to sit and figure out how to get ice skates on a one year old - not an easy task!!

After everyone's skates were finally on, we headed for the ice. Owen's Mama is not the most graceful on skates, so Papa was Owen's rock of stability.
Owen wasn't too sure about his skates or the ice...

So we took a little break in the players box...
We thought Owen might like to give skating another shot - this time using the help of Papa AND a walker...

Owen soon had enough of skating on his own...
So Shane swept him up in his arms and off we skated. Owen loved holding onto Papa as he sailed around the rink. (Skating yourself is just too much work!)

We had a great time skating and making this a New Year's Eve to remember!

After skating we headed home to warm ourselves up with a Colombian favorite - Ajiaco soup. Unfortunately I didn't plan ahead appropriately and had to revise the recipe a bit - papas criollas (a yellow potato) and guascas (an herb) are sure hard to locate in Minnesota!! Next time I'll plan ahead and order them online! Although substantially revised, the soup still turned out pretty tasty if I do say so myself! Of course it was not a good as Rosita's!

Our household was pretty quiet when the clock rang midnight - everyone was fast asleep except for me. With only a few minutes of 2008 remaining, I woke up Shane who had fallen asleep on the couch just in time to get my new year's kiss.

New Year's day was another day of family firsts. We grabbed the sled that Santa had brought and took off for the park down the street. It was not the warmest day, so everyone was bundled up - all three of us felt like abominable snowmen!
We had some fun sledding down the hill and pulling Owen around the snow-covered soccer field... ...but with the cold air whipping at our faces and Owen's mittens having the hardest time staying on...
...we were all soon ready to go, especially Owen...

After all that hard work sledding, Owen was treated to another first...a whole banana! Owen loves bananas, but they've always been cut into nice little pieces. Well today he wanted to try eating a banana like a big boy...
He was so interested in eating that banana that he quickly gobbled the whole thing up...
For dinner Shane and I attempted to make our very first turkey. Yes, we cooked an entire 13 1/2 pound turkey for just the three of us! We had no idea what we were doing, but it actually turned out splendidly. (Although we'll be eating turkey all week long!)

We had a terrific time ringing in the new year and look forward to all the exciting family adventures that await us in 2009! We wish you all a very blessed and happy 2009!
