Don't Take My Tooth

Owen lost another tooth - his 5th one to be exact. This one decided to fall out at school during lunch. Owen was chomping away on strawberries (his favorite fruit) and he decided to put several in his mouth. He's always in a rush during lunch because the faster he eats, the sooner he can go outside for recess. Well, this time he stuffed his mouth a bit too full and out came a loose tooth. Recess would have to wait as Owen made his way to the nurse's office.

The poor kid does not like blood and, of course, there was quite a bit of blood translating into quite a few tears. But after both dried up, Owen got to pick out a little treasure chest to put his tooth in. He choose an orange one - his favorite color. That day when he got home from school, he pulled the tiny treasure chest out of his pocket and filled me in on what had happened.

By this time, he was excited that his tooth fell out and looking forward to his nighttime visitors - the Tooth Fairy and El Raton Perez. While the Tooth Fairy likes to bring cash, El Raton usually brings a small gift. At some point, Owen decided that since El Raton is magical, the little mouse must be able to hear what Owen says. So Owen will talk out loud to El Raton and tell him exactly what gift he'd like. This time Owen wished for a Megalosaurus. Uh-oh. I was pretty sure that El Raton did not have a Megalosaurus in his inventory.

There was one major problem (other than the lack of Megalosauruses). Shane was out of town and Owen wanted him to see the tooth BEFORE the Tooth Fairy and El Raton came to take it away. So that night, Owen wrote a note to his visitors. It said, "don't take my tooth".

The note worked! The next morning when Owen woke up, his tooth was still there. He was so relieved. He didn't want to part with his tooth, so he brought it to school with him. That night at Family Faith Formation at church, we ran into one of Owen's friends from school and his mom. The mom said to Owen, "I heard you lost a tooth. Can I see?" thinking that he would give her a big grin to show off the space where the tooth used to be. She was quite surprised when he pulled out his orange treasure chest to show her the actual tooth!

The tooth had been toted around so much that when Owen opened it up that night before going to bed, it had split into 2 pieces. He was quite worried that El Raton and the Tooth Fairy wouldn't want it now, but I assured him that it'll be even better now because they each can have a part. Well, Owen was skeptical and made me write a note to them apologizing for the broken tooth.

The next morning, Owen woke up to 65 cents and a Spinosaurus. I guess El Raton must have had a Spinosaurus in his inventory - phew! Owen was thrilled to finally have a Spinosaurus that could stand up on its two back legs. That El Raton...somehow he knew the perfect dinosaur for Owen.
