Cole's 16th Family Day

So many kids, so many celebrations! On February 17th, we celebrated Cole's 16th Family Day. While not a typical day to celebrate for biological kids, when you are the only bio in the house, you also get a special day.

February 17, 2009 was the day we found out we were expecting our tiny miracle. Just 3 days later, we got to see the very first photo of our sweet little peanut.

Fast forward 16 years, and that tiny peanut has grown into nearly an adult - all in the blink of an eye.

The way to Cole's heart is most definitely food, so it was only fitting to celebrate his special day with dinner from his favorite restaurant - Red Robin! Cole has loved Red Robin for as long as I can remember. He never ventures away from his tried-and-true favorites of a plain burger (hold everything but the ketchup, please!) with a side of fries and a cranberry juice.

Of course, a dessert course was needed for the big day, and a Red Robin chocolate chip cookie was the perfect sweet treat for our cookie-loving boy. Cole loved his little celebration and being the Big Cheese for the day.

Cole is most definitely the household comedian. He enjoys telling jokes and being a silly clown. He'll go out of his way to make his siblings smile, especially Aria and Sam. He loves to give them tickles and do goofy antics to bring a smile to their faces. Making people laugh makes him happy.

He is a huge help around the house. If I need assistance, Cole is my guy. I'm always asking him to fetch me this or that, and he happily complies. In fact, if I ask someone else instead of him, he gets quite offended having his services delegated to another sibling. He loves being my #1 helper.

Cole is a great big brother. He eagerly assists his little siblings whenever help is requested. He hates seeing any of them sad and will do everything in his power to change that frown upside down. Finding them a toy, turning on a favorite show, even handing over his very own iPad. He has a heart of gold and is our very empathic child.

Cole is a huge Xbox addict. He can navigate the system at stellar speed, his hands knowing what to press before I even get a chance to read the screen. He now has three versions of Xbox, including an old school Xbox 360 that is on its last leg. It was the first one he ever received and one of his favorites with all the fun sports options and sensor to track a player's movements. Alas, very few of the 360 games are still functioning. Most have scratched or cracked over the years. Thankfully, Cole enjoys the newer Xbox versions as well. His all-time favorite games being the WWE series. A new version has been released annually for the last several years, and every year Cole waits with much anticipation, counting down the days until the newest version is released. He is quite the super fan!

Cole's love of WWE is not only on-screen. He loves practicing various wrestling moves on his littlest siblings. Most often, just before bed when we are finishing up our nightly routines, Cole can be found on the floor with Aria flipped over his shoulder or next to Sam with him pinned to the ground. They both find it hilarious of course!

Cole is a man of routine. He likes to know what to expect and doesn't like to veer off his typical schedule. This is also very true with food. The boy could literally live off of chicken nuggets and cranberry juice. It is his go-to meal for all occasions. He'd eat them for breakfast, lunch, and dinner if he could (and often he does!)

Cole is quite the home body. He has his favorite hang-out spots - the last stool on the kitchen island with easy access to the outlet for his iPad streaming, the playroom where he can get his fill of xbox games, and the master bedroom, (aka "Mom's room" as he likes to call it). Mom's room has long been a place where he can relax in quiet and have full control of the TV without worrying about his much bossier siblings.

Cole is such a hard worker and puts up with my crazy ideas. Like when I enrolled him in a clinical trial at Gillette Children's Hospital to help improve his gait. He had no idea what was in-store for him! He was nearly covered top to bottom with some sort of device - sensors, tape, a harness, even an oxygen mask - oh my!! Sadly he was assigned to the control group and not able to use the device they were testing, but he worked hard none-the-less, completing the several weeklong trial and even improved his gait.

A very happy 16th Family Day to our sweet, goofy, fun-loving, one-of-a-kind boy!
