It was an emotional morning as we said goodbye to our kids and set off for Guyana. Lots of hugs were given and lots of tears were shed. The kids are thankfully in excellent care with Nana Judy, Popi Dave and Great Aunt Donna spending the next 2+ weeks at our house taking care of our crew. We are so thankful that they were able to take over in our absence.
At noon, we departed Minneapolis bound for Miami. Despite a bit of turbulence, which I am REALLY not a fan of, the first leg of our trip went as expected. We had a 2+ hour layover in Miami and spent some time enjoying free drinks and food at The Centurion Lounge - an American Express perk.
Our flight to Georgetown, Guyana left Miami in the early evening. It was supposed to be a 4 1/2 hour flight but we arrived 30 minutes early. We made our way through customs and off to find our driver Quincy who was waiting for us.
Through a common Facebook group, I was put in touch with a wonderfully helpful person currently residing in Georgetown. Kim and her husband had adopted a little girl from Colombia, thus the commonality. They are originally from the U.S. but currently living as expats in Georgetown. She has been such an immense help answering questions, putting me in contact with her driver Quincy, and gathering baby items for us to use during our stay like a portable crib and baby swing. She has offered to show us around town, bring us shopping and even let us do our laundry at her house. We are so thankful for all she has done for our family.
We found Quincy waiting for us outside the airport and loaded up all our luggage in his car - thank goodness it fit! Then off we drove through the darkness to the Marriott. Quincy navigated the Georgetown roads like a pro. Here they drive on the left hand side of the road and the steering wheel is on the right. It'll definitely take some time getting used to the new traffic rules! Thankfully we will not be attempting to drive ourselves during our stay.
It was past midnight by the time we got to our hotel. We will be spending our first 10 days at the Marriott (thank you Marriott points!!) and then checking into another location to test out a couple places to see what will work best for when we travel with our entire crew. The front desk at the Marriott were so kind and welcoming and even gave us each a bottle of their local beer. The hotel is beautiful and we even have a view of the ocean. It's too dark to enjoy now, but I'm excited to see it come morning.
For now we are settling into our room and can hopefully catch some zzz's so we can be well rested for our next big step on our journey. Quincy will be picking us up to meet Aria at the Child Protection Agency at 2:00 this afternoon! We can not wait! Pray that we won't have to wait too long to get custody of her.
Goodnight from Guyana!
