After an exhausting day yesterday, we spent the morning at the apartment, playing both inside and out and catching up on homework.
At 1:00 pm, Maria Teresa Perez arrived with the paperwork we needed to start moving forward on Kate's adoption. She was running an hour behind schedule because she needed to pick up notarized copies of Owen's Colombian birth certificate so that he can leave the country. (In Colombia, all Colombian minors are required to provide a notarized copy of their birth certificate in order to leave the country. I only had one copy of Owen's left so this was the perfect time to replenish our stock!) Normally we would have signed the paperwork at our presentation of Kate at FANA, but since that was unable to happen, we get to do it in our messy apartment instead. This is Step 1 in the process! Woo hoo!! We are thankful that we can start moving forward on the adoption process while Kate is still recovering in the hospital.
At 1:30 pm, Patricia picked Shane and me up for our drive through the city. First we swung by Lava Sport to drop off our laundry. It's always more difficult than it should be. Last time we were here for Rose, we'd drop off our clothes in the morning, they'd wash, dry and fold them and then we'd pick them up later that day. This time around they said we need to stay and do the clothes ourselves. Who wants to spend 2 hours sitting at the laundromat? Definitely not us! Once again they said we can throw them in the wash and that they'd move them to the dryer for us and we could fold them when we returned. BUT this is the last time they'll let us do that, so we'll need to come up with some alternative plan for next week's laundry. After all the laundry confusion, we were finally off for our afternoon hospital visit to see Kate.
I was so anxious to see how Kate was doing today. It's hard going almost 24 hours without seeing your sick child and with no updates in between. This time, both Shane and I were able to enter the hospital at the same time. Kate was laying in bed awake when we arrived. She gave me the biggest most adorable smile when she saw me. Ahh, it melted this Mama's heart to see her so happy when she saw me! Since Shane missed yesterday's visit, I let him be the first one to hold her today. Kate was beaming - look at that adorable face!
Kate was still on oxygen when we arrived, but she was very alert and all smiles. She charms everyone with her adorable grin.
It was nebulizer time again, and she sat on Shane's lap throughout it with a big smile on her face. She's such an easy going baby to put up with all these various and often uncomfortable medical procedures.
Finally it was my turn to hold her! When Shane offered, I jumped at the chance to hold my little cuddle bug.
She was very talkative today. Her favorite word is "dadadada". I caught the tail end of one of Kate's conversations just before she decided to chomp away on her toy. She is just too cute!
At 3:00 pm the doctor came over and removed Kate from the oxygen. This was a test to see how she'd react to being off it. We all sat and anxiously waited to she how she'd do. She dozed off for a while which always makes me nervous when she's off the oxygen and sleeping. I kept feeling her chest to make sure she was still breathing.
At 4:00 pm, they came back to test her oxygen saturation level. Once again, it had fallen down to 73%. This was much too low so they started her back up on oxygen immediately.
Shortly afterward, we got word that they were moving Kate out of the Emergency Room and up to the pediatric hospital wing on the 5th floor. The FANA nurse packed up all of Kate's belongings and Kate's nasal cannula was attached to a portable oxygen tank. I was the lucky one who rode in class while holding my sweet girl.
We were pushed down the long hallways of the ER lined with sick people to the elevator and taken up to the 5th floor. The nurse pulled the blanket over Kate's head to keep the sick-bugs away. But Kate did not like having her face covered up and kept trying to pull it off.
Kate is now in a room with 4 other kids and has a window view! There is a different entrance that we will need to learn how to navigate tomorrow, but for now, she has settled into her new digs. We are hopeful that after a few more days in the hospital she will be able to breathe on her own.
Tomorrow morning we leave at 6:45 am for our 8:00 am interview with Bienestar. Step 2 in the process so wish us luck!! After that
meeting, we will be all set for Step 3 - the court proceedings!! Everything is
finally coming together at lightening speed! Keep praying for our little one. We need her to get better so we can bring her home.
