On Sundays, the Usaquen area of Bogota is filled with all sorts of artisans selling their handmade goods. It's a great place to buy mementos. After a long walk, we had finally arrived! We stopped at the Santa Barbara Shopping Center first to enjoy a drink at Oma (juice for the kids and coffee for the grownups) before continuing on our way to the market.
We stopped at a nearby park on our way to do more shopping. Last time we were here, there were pigeons everywhere. This time around there were only a few to be seen so the kids were a bit disappointed. They sure love chasing birds.
Jorge picked us up at Usaquen, we dropped Nana and the kids off at the apartment and then continued on to the hospital. Kate was a bit upset when we arrived but the nurse picked her up and handed her to me and she quickly calmed down. Kate really loves sucking on her pointer and middle fingers. She had them in her mouth nearly our entire visit.
She was very alert today and loved playing with her toys, shaking them and chewing on them. I'm pretty sure a new tooth is going to pop up any day now.
We spoke with the doctor again today but didn't learn much new. The doctor said she was slowly improving but that it will take time as her condition is complicated because she doesn't just have one but two different viruses (Influenza B and RSV). She is still on oxygen therapy and her breathing rate is still quite labored. They are giving her various inhalers to help heal her lungs.
I was holding Kate when I saw the FANA nurse with her bottle. It was too warm to give to her right away, so I tried to hide Kate's view of the bottle while it cooled. But Kate caught a glimpse of it and started to cry and cry. She LOVES her bottles and has zero patience when it comes to waiting for it! Thankfully I was able to calm her down and she dozed off. A few minutes later, the nurse brought the bottle over and Kate perked right up. She sucked it down quickly and then fell asleep in my arms.
5:00 pm arrived way too quickly and our visit had once again come to an end. I tried my best to transfer Kate to the bed without waking her, but it's a nearly impossible feat with all the wires connected to her little body. She woke up quite agitated but after giving her her favorite rattle, she calmed down. She was happily playing with her rattle as we had to turn our backs and leave her yet again at the hospital. It's truly gut wrenching leaving your sick 9 month old, but we are so thankful there is someone from FANA with her at all times keeping an eye on our little girl. We hope one day soon will be the last day we have to say goodbye.
Kate is still a very sick little one and will need to be in the hospital for several more days. We had been told when we planned our trip that we needed to have our presentation (the day we go to FANA to take custody of Kate) by May 7th to ensure we wouldn't be impacted by the elections in Colombia at the end of May. There is no way we'll be making that date so tonight Shane messaged our in-country rep Maria Teresa Perez to find out exactly what days the government will be closed. According to Maria Teresa Perez, only the registries are closed during the elections and we don't need to use the registries for our adoption process. This was wonderful news!! We had anticipated an additional 2 week delay at the end of May but it sounds like that is not the case. We just may make it home before June after all! All we need now is for Kate's health to return so that she can be released from the hospital and we can finally start moving forward on our adoption process. Please continue to pray for healing for our little nugget.
