Yesterday we woke bright and early at 4:30 am to get ready for our journey. We said goodbye to the kids although Rose and Owen were still in such a deep sleep I'm not sure they'll remember. It was heartbreaking to leave them behind, but thankfully they are in good hands with their Nanas and Popi.
Our Uber picked us up and off we headed to the airport. Things were going as planned until it was time to board our Delta flight to Miami. As we approached the agent with our tickets to board, the computer made a beep and we were told to get out of line and speak with an agent at the desk. Our hearts sunk when the agent said our seats had been double booked. There was no way that plane was leaving without us on it! After a few more minutes, we realized for some reason, we had 2 separate confirmation numbers assigned to our booking, so we did indeed have seats!! We boarded the plane thinking that would be the most eventful part of our travel story...until we got to Miami.
The flight went quickly and soon we were just above Miami. But a thunderstorm has just rolled in. We were in a holding pattern and the captain said we didn't have much gas to continue holding. We needed to land soon. Talk about a scary situation. After a few more minutes flying in circles, he announced that the Miami airport had just closed due to the storm and we were heading to West Palm Beach to land and refuel.
West Palm Beach was about a 20 minute flight away. We landed safely thank goodness and refueled the plane. We were all ready to head back to Miami - the storm had just passed and the airport was reopened. But now the thunderstorm had moved over West Palm Beach and we couldn't take off. It was about a 90 minute drive from West Palm Beach to Miami and some people got off the plane, but any checked luggage would stay on the plane and be brought back to Miami. We thankfully had a 6 hour layover with ample time to catch our flight to Guyana, so we waited. The captain would announce that we'd be able to take off shortly, and then come back to say another lightening strike was seen so we'd need to wait yet again. This happened several times over the next 2 hour period with news we'd soon be leaving to being yet again detained.
FINALLY, the storm passed and we were once again on our way to Miami. At 4:15pm we landed in Miami. Our connecting flight to Guyana was on American leaving at 7:15pm, so we made our way to the luggage claim, then to the American check-in counter and back through security. After the long ordeal, we ended up with just 1 hour to spare. We had a bite to eat and a couple well deserved drinks at the Centurion Lounge and headed to our gate. Even with the airport closure, our flight to Guyana was on time!
We arrived safe and sound at 11:45pm, made our way through a very long and slow immigration line, meet our driver Quincey and took off for our hotel. I forgot just how far away the airport is from the city. We drove and drove down dark roads, going way too fast for my liking. Even at this time of night, we passed several pedestrians walking down the side of the road as we buzzed by. After an hour, we pulled up to the Kings Hotel where we will be staying for the next 5 nights.
It was a long exhausting travel day but we are here! We brought the stroller along and when you have a stroller but no baby, people tend to look at you oddly. So our mantra became, "We're going to get our baby!" I must have repeated that a dozen times. We're going to get our baby!! In only a couple hours, Aria will be forever in our arms!
