Day 25 in Bogotá!

It’s hard to imagine we’ve been in Bogotá for 25 days! Time is sure flying by and we are enjoying every minute of it!

This morning Owen was glued to the crib aquarium that Papa sent with our visitors. He liked it so much that he couldn’t make up his mind whether to sit in his crib to see the bubbles and fish moving around or to have Mama hold him. He went back and forth from crib to Mama to crib to Mama to crib.

Later Owen helped Grandma and Uncle James with their suitcase…

…and showed them the view from our window.

Then Uncle James got a little bit of “Owen time”…

…and Grandma fed him some cereal…

After breakfast Owen and I took Grandma and Uncle James on a walking tour of the area. The first item on our agenda was to find a birthday cake for Owen. I had spotted a bakery called Pasteleria Guernika on our search to find a laundry mat - they had all sorts of kid’s birthday cakes on display in the window.

When we first got there, I told the woman that was helping us that my Spanish was muy malo so she asked another lady to help us. So I figured the other lady knew some English, but no – she didn’t know one word! So I stumbled through trying to understand what she was saying as she spoke very rapidly. She whipped out a cake and cut 3 small pieces so we could have a sample. It was very good, but the design was not what we were looking for. We wanted something fun for a kid’s birthday, not a cake decorated with strawberries and nuts. So she then brought out a book full of all sorts of adorable cakes. It was a bit of a communication struggle, but I think we ordered an Elmo tres leches cake. It’ll be very grande, but we just had to splurge for Owen’s very first birthday!

After ordering the cake, we headed to lunch at Oma. Owen hadn’t slept well last night with all the excitement of meeting our guests at the airport. He was not his chipper self so Grandma took him on a walk around the restaurant to get him in a better mood. He’s a bit of a Mama’s boy, so Grandma had to make sure he couldn’t see me.

After his time with Grandma, he was feeling much better and we all got some Owen love.

For Owen’s lunch, Mama had brought him some pea and carrot soup…which he did NOT like at ALL.

Instead he decided to not only spit it out, but to blow it out of his mouth. It sprayed everywhere! We couldn’t help but laugh at him! So he started laughing at us!

No peas and carrots for him! He had his eyes on Grandma’s pollo y champinones with a side of papas fritas.

After lunch, we decided to get a start on our souvenir shopping so we headed to Maku and Migues. By then the dark clouds were rolling in so we made our way back to our apartment. Owen loves to suck on his thumb and pointer finger so much that one of his fingers had gotten infected. So Grandma and Mama got it cleaned up, put a band-aid on and then put some nasty tasting anti-thumb sucking stuff on his finger nail to help keep it out of his mouth. Uncle James was able to distract him from the band-aid for a while...

...but it didn't last long.

He first tried to stick his finger in his mouth, but it did not taste good! So he proceeded to try to gnaw it off. Needless to say, the band-aid did not stay on long!

We then got to work wrapping birthday gifts and decorating for the big party tomorrow. Although Papa won’t be able to be here in person, all of Papa’s side of the family will be at our house celebrating and we’ll be able to see each other over the webcam.

That’s about it for our day. I’m heading off to bed to get ready for the big day tomorrow. I still can’t believe my little boy will be turning one!
